This is Leela, my cat. This is me, Issa. I made this sculpture because I like picking up Leela from under the bed. Sometimes when I pick her up, she gets angry when I do something she doesn’t like – like make her stick out her legs or drop her on the floor. Then I feel bad for her. She also gets angry when I hold her wrong. Then, she scratches my t-shirt to get up.
When Leela is happy, she likes to play. When I get her out from under the bed and put her on the bed and hold her properly, she purrs. This makes me feel happy and proud. I like it when Leela purrs.
I made a dress out of cotton, my skin out of wood, and my face out of cotton balls for my eyes and my nose and little cuts of felt for my eyelashes, my hair, and my mouth. I made an angry mouth, a confused mouth, and a happy mouth so I can change how I feel. I hot glue gunned the hair and the face.
I am proud of the way I chose materials. I knew how to make the dress and I knew the skin could be made out of wood. I sewed around the cat and then filled it with stuffing. This was my first time sewing something, and I felt proud and happy!
